How safe are dental x-rays?
Many parents ask “How safe are dental x-rays?” Today’s dental x-rays are incredibly safe. When taking x-rays of your child’s teeth and gums, we are very careful to ensure your child is exposed to as little radiation as possible. This is done using lead aprons and a very high-speed film that allow the x-rays to be taken very quickly to ensure your child’s safety.
Just as with hospital x-rays, pediatric dentists receive guidelines as to when dental x-rays should be performed. In general, a healthy child who does not have an increased risk for tooth problems or decay only needs a dental x-ray once every one to two years. These guidelines have been set by the American Dental Association to protect your child’s dental and physical health.
